An engine turbocharger is a device that uses the energy of engine exhaust gases to drive a turbine, thereby compressing air and increasing the intake air volume. It is a key component of the engine system. Its core function is to increase air density, allowing more oxygen to enter the combustion chamber, thus improving engine power and combustion efficiency.

Core Components and Working Principle

A turbocharger mainly consists of a turbine, compressor, bearings, and seals. During operation, the high-temperature exhaust gases (up to 800-900℃) from the engine drive the turbine impeller to rotate. The impeller, via a coaxial drive, compresses the air. The compressed air is then cooled by an intercooler before entering the cylinders. The turbine speed can reach 200,000 revolutions per minute, requiring oil lubrication and bearings to reduce friction.

Technical Characteristics and Classification

Drive Method: Divided into exhaust gas turbocharging (driven by exhaust gases) and mechanical supercharging (driven via crankshaft belt).

Performance Advantages: Compared to naturally aspirated engines, turbocharging significantly improves power output while also enhancing fuel economy and emissions.

Turbocharger Engagement Speed: The turbocharger engages at different speeds depending on the vehicle model. For example, the Buick Regal 2.0T engages at 2000-4000 rpm, which may limit low-speed acceleration.

Turbochargers are widely used in diesel engines, passenger cars, and construction machinery (such as excavators and loaders). Maintenance requires regular oil changes (fully synthetic oil can protect the turbocharger) to prevent high temperatures from aging the seals. Some high-end models employ a twin-turbo or vortex design to mitigate turbo lag.
