Piston rings are critical metal seals in the engine piston assembly. Embedded in the piston ring groove, they perform four major functions: sealing, oil control, heat conduction, and support. Piston rings are divided into two categories: compression rings and oil rings. The compression ring seals the high-pressure gases in the combustion chamber, preventing them from leaking into the crankcase. It also transfers 70%-80% of the heat from the piston crown to the cylinder wall for dissipation. The oil ring scrapes excess oil from the cylinder wall, maintaining a thin oil film and directing any remaining oil back to the oil pan through the ring groove's oil return hole.
